Jaques puts Australia in command
The Author

Hey, my name is The Web Guy, and I first published 'Jaques puts Australia in command' on 5th November, 2007, within the Cricket section.
Australia took charge on the opening day of the first Test with Sri Lanka in Brisbane, with Phil Jaques marking the occasion with his first Test century.
The day was cut short by bad light, but it was a fine day for New South Wales star Jaques who dominated the Sri Lankan attack.
Only Muttiah Muralitharan was able to put the brakes on, as his 2-67 from 23 overs allowed Mahela Jayawardene to exert some control.
The Australians got off to a flier as Jaques and Matthew Hayden (43) put on 69 before the latter fell to Chaminda Vass.
Muralitharan’s fine running catch was a rare bright spot in the field for Sri Lanka who dropped four catches.
Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting looked in ominous form as he passed 50, but was cut down by Muralitharan who beat him with a turning delivery and Prasanna Jayawardene removed the bails.
Jaques, who took 30 balls to get off the mark, remained unmoved and he moved to a century but immediately fell to Muralitharan.Mike Hussey had moved to 28 before play was called off for the day due to bad light and the Australians look well placed at 242-3 to push on and post a big score.
